この度、Yoshimi Artsでは、レイチェル・アダムスの個展「Open Studio」を開催致します。
レイチェル・アダムスとの出会いは、2013年にロンドンのSaatchi Galleryで開催されたグループ展「Paper」で発表した彫刻作品でした。その作品は、一見古典的なブロンズ像や石像の位相を持っていましたが、知覚がその作品の重量感に違和感を教えてくれました。近づいてみると全て着色された紙で形作られており、紙という素材は慣れ親しんだ物なのに今まで見た事もないその作品に感動致しました。その後、2014年9月にYoshimi Artsでのグループ展「”Material and Form” in a digital age」に出品作家として招待し、その展覧会でアダムスはSaatchi Gallery で発表した作品と同シリーズを含む立体作品3点と、平面1点を発表しました。
「Open Studio」はレイチェル・アダムスの日本初となる個展です。本展では、スタジオでの制作行為の意義と、創造性が家庭生活にどのように働きかけるのかを考察します。アダムスは20世紀の彫刻史に影響を受け、彫刻家のスタジオと、そこで制作を行う彫刻家たちに思いを馳せてきました。それと並行して、現代家具やライフスタイルブログから着想を得たイメージを描き続けています。手染めの布地と、高度なデジタル処理技術によって造られたアクリル製のオブジェクト、そして伝統的な彫刻手法と道具を用いたこの新しい彫刻のシリーズは、歴史に対する私達の知覚概念と、アートとデザインを隔てている階層的な構造の矛盾点を浮き彫りにします。
現在、アダムスはスコットランドのグラスゴーで暮らし制作しています。イギリス各地やオランダで作品を発表しており、2015年10月からは1年間、The British School at RomeのSainsbury Scholarship in Painting and Sculpture 受賞によりローマに滞在する予定です。イギリスで注目されている現代作家レイチェル・アダムスの新作による個展「Open Studio」を是非ご高覧頂ければと存じます。
