We are pleased to announce Minako Nishiyama’s solo exhibition, “MINAKO NISHIYAMA / boudoir…”.
Since the late 1980s, Minako Nishiyama has created three-dimensional pulp pieces, and works that intensely highlight Japanese ‘girl culture’, including “The PINKÚ House” (1991), reminiscent of the gigantic, Barbie house-like ‘Licca-chan’s house’, and Takarazuka Revue’s backdrop-esque pieces. She is one of the figures who began making works of art through the unique medium of the Japanese subculture.
An archive exhibition is currently being held in the exhibition, “FEMINISMS”, at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. Two works from Nishiyama’s “Telephone Project” are presented, “♡Erica’s Palpitant Teleppon Club♡” (1992) and “MOSHI MOSHI Pink ~ the other side of the telephone ~” (1995), both inspired by the adult-entertainment business in the 90s. The exhibition indicated that the duality of pink, which is both favored by young girls and a symbol of the sex industry, intersects with consumer culture.
In this exhibition, we will reintroduce “ref(lection) painting”, a series that makes use of light reflection, as well as one of the small boudoirs made with “Ref-work”, as produced in the project, “Knit Café In My Room By Mitsuharu Hirose and Minako Nishiyama” (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa) in 2009. The intersection of works created at different times will reveal the dual nature of pink in the space.
