Yoshimi Arts is pleased to announce that we are holding “NIZAYAMA”, a solo exhibition by Takehiro Terabayashi.

The exhibition features Terabayashi’s painting, “1925- (1995-)”, created for his solo exhibition, “Takehiro Terabayashi - LIFE -”, that was held from October 2023 to March 2024 at Nizayama Forest Art Museum in Nyuzen-machi, Toyama Prefecture. As he had commuted from his home in Hiroshima Prefecture, the work was painted during his 50-day stay at the venue, and deliberately depicts scenes from within the museum. The figures in the title of the artwork represent the year the building was established primarily as a power plant, and the year it was renovated as an art museum. In addition to the artist-in-residence work, we will also bring together works from the aforementioned exhibition, selected by Terabayashi himself, as well as his latest works.

In recent years, while it has become a major trend for many artists to use various mediums such as photographs, Terabayashi has been consistent in his style of drawing, spending most of his time in production standing right in front of the object to capture it through his eyes. It can be said that, nowadays, where most people look at things via the internet, objects are viewed two-dimensionally, and events as flat information. However, Terabayashi, who studied design at university, has a good understanding of the logical superiority of observation through one's eyes, compared to the machine identification of things, and thus, his works show his obsession with looking at real things.

Terabayashi also says that what inspires him the most is when he selects motifs that make him feel special and induce a genuine craving for drawing. These words also describe the very essence of his works; what exist in his works are his urges to draw “insignificant things” that can be found in the daily life of an ordinary household.

Terabayashi’s creative approach, the same as during his artist-in-residency production, garnered attention from numerous local TVs, newspapers, and art magazines, and received favorable reviews from many viewers.

We look forward to your visit, and invite you to appreciate the results of Terabayashi’s solo exhibition at Nizayama.
