Yoshimi Arts is pleased to announce that we are holding “Rachel Adams 2014-2020”, a solo show of Rachel Adams working in Glasgow (Scotland).
My encounter with Adams focused on the sculpture work she presented in the group exhibition "Paper" held in 2013 at Saatchi Gallery in London. The work appeared to possess the features of classic bronze and stone sculptures, but but, as one looked at it closer, the sculpture was composed with colored paper, I still vividly remember being moved by a sensation that I had never felt even though paper is familiar material.
After that, she was invited to present her work in the group exhibition, “Material and Form in a digital age”, to be held at Yoshimi Arts in 2014. In 2015, the gallery hosted her first solo exhibition in Japan, "Open Studio". The presented works—a series of sculptures created with hand dyed fabric, digitally fabricated acrylic shapes and traditional sculptural tools—highlighted contradictions in both our perceived notions of history and hierarchical structures separating art from design.
In 2021, for her second solo exhibition at our gallery in six years, "Home Grown", she presented the artworks, that she created in the situation in 2020, when the outbreak of a global pandemic drastically changed society and people's lives, and Scotland, where she lives, has also faced lockdown a few times, and that have the appearance that mushrooms are growing from an interior and design magazine “ELLE Decoration” (UK) that she subscribes to monthly.
In this exhibition, we will show the sculptures that Adams, a contemporary British artist, has presented in our gallery so far, under a layout the viewer can face to the works.
